OMNIAid Sponsors Local Students for JMU’s Sixth Annual CyberCity Technology Program July 10, 2012
OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation is a proud sponsor of JMU’s 6th annual CyberCity, a program that provides an outreach to under-represented 8th, 9th and 10th graders and their teachers from around the metropolitan Washington DC area. Students and teachers from the schools are invited to the James Madison University campus to explore practical applications of science and technology. This year, CyberCity was held from June 20 to June 23. Over 40 students and 20 teachers attended the program which provides a one-on-one academic environment that encourages and motivates students to recognize their individual potential and to encourage thoughts about college and technology careers. In addition, the program stimulates teachers to identify, learn, and implement new and current innovations and technology into their curriculum.
OMNIAid sponsored five local schools to participate this year. Park View HS in Sterling, Gar-Field HS and CD Hylton HS in Woodbridge, Robert E. Lee HS in Springfield, and Mt. Vernon HS in Alexandria were selected by the committee from a list of high schools in the Northern Virginia area that had large under-represented populations of students.
During the four-day stay on campus, CyberCity attendees gained the first-hand experience of college life at JMU by dining in the dining halls, meeting with faculty and staff, learning about college admissions, and discussing careers in business, science, and technology. New programs offered this year included a session on making good decisions presented by a Central Intelligence Agency representative and a presentation on creative problem solving presented by a Walmart industrial engineer.
Giving area children a vision of a future they might have never dreamed for themselves during critical years in their life and impacting local schools through teacher education is a community out-reach that makes OMNIAid very proud to have been part and to play a role in the CyberCity Program.
