Julien G. Patterson Speaks at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner November 30, 2008
On November 18, 2008, Mr. Julien G. Patterson, Founder and Chairman, OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation, was the keynote speaker for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce annual dinner in Lancaster, VA. The meeting was attended by 150 Lancaster Chamber members, supporters, entrepreneurs, and special guests.
Lancaster County is located at the tip of Virginia’s uppermost peninsula in a coastal setting less than two and a half hours from major metropolitan areas. The Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce helps its members through its support of compatible economic development, education, and promotion of member businesses.
Mr. Patterson spoke about the importance of the local and state Chambers as a support to local businesses. He also discussed the role chamber members play in making a difference in the economy and community, “You, the Chamber, are the people who make the difference; you are the confident doers and the motivators, who with your products and services, your pride in the community, and your eye toward the future, ….you give the community a sense of well-being.”
Mr. Patterson pointed out that Forbes.com rated Virginia the best state in the nation to do business for the third year in a row. Virginia placed int eh top ten in all evaluations categories including business costs, economic climate, growth prospects, labor, quality of life, and regulatory environment. Patterson encouraged the Chamber not to settle for this success but to take the opportunity to improve and grow.
As a former President of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Patterson is intimately familiar with the concerns and issues facing the Virginia economy and how the state Chamber works to support the local chambers. He discussed how the Virginia Chamber of Commerce shares the same interests in reducing economic disparity; workforce development; early educational development; adequate workforce housing; and the stewardship responsibilities of businesses to the community.
Mr. Patterson spoke of the value of Chambers of Commerce to their community, saying, “Chambers have flourished for so long because they offer constant value to its members: business fellowship, value to the community, true friendship, and good works to those in need. Chambers are about issues of interest to their membership, and certainly civic engagement and social connectedness are top proprieties. So, here’s the bottom line, in communities where the right things are accomplished,…. people are happier.”
He finished by encouraging the audience with a quote from Nkosi Johnson, …“Do all you can, …with what you have, … in the time you have, … in the place you are.” (Nkosi Johnson died in 2001 of AIDS at age 12, inspired millions in Africa and around the world to action in the fight against the epidemic. The South African boy is the subject of a new book by ABC newsman Jim Wooten, who says Johnson's courage in the face of death was deeply moving. )
