Julien G. Patterson Speaks at the National Science Foundation Joint Annual Meeting July 20, 2008
On June 18, 2008, Mr. Julien G. Patterson, Founder and Chairman, OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation, was the keynote speaker for the National Science Foundation and Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP) Joint Annual Meeting. The meeting was held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.
The meeting was attended by the LSAMP’s Bridge to the Doctorate Fellows as well as undergraduate students from the NSF Summer Interns Program; summer interns from the Quality Education for Minorities Program (QEM); college and university faculty and administrators; and NSF program officers.
NSF founded LSAMP in 1991 to increase minority representation in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, (STEM). The intent of this initiative is an investment in students who participate in the LSAMP and QEM programs; with the expectation that this investment will help them pursue the opportunity to achieve academic success in the STEM disciplines and grow to be a valuable resource for the nation.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear Mr. Paterson’s personal story of the hard work and perseverance that he invested to achieve success in the professional and commercial community. Mr. Patterson spoke about Opportunities and Choices – A Moment in Time, a Lifetime of Consequences. Using his own life as an example, Mr. Patterson outlined a formula for success, “The winning formula is having a clear vision about what you want to accomplish, having a real plan as to how to achieve it, and building valuable relationships with people who believe in you and in what you are trying to do”.
Mr. Patterson used anecdotes and real-life examples to illustrate the importance of being the “right” person, having and practicing the “right” values, and making the “right choices.” He encouraged the audience recognize that these are important elements of meaningful accomplishments, real happiness, and true success and that they do make a meaningful difference in how far each may go to in his life journey.
