OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation Founder and Chairman, Julien G. Patterson Speaks at Chesapeake Academy January 10, 2008
On January 10, 2008, Mr. Julien G. Patterson, Founder and Chairman of OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation, spoke to Chesapeake Academy students, their families, and business leaders about values and decision making.
Mr. Patterson spoke about the importance of being a person of integrity throughout one's life. He asked the students and attendees to imagine a report card that is a reflection of how well they have done in life; a report card that is as a reflection of relationships with family, friends, neighbors, and others. "Do you think you would make the Honor List for character, honesty and integrity?" he asked.
Mr. Patterson shared three thoughts about receiving a "good grade" on the report card of life. He spoke about being the "right" type of person; about having and constantly putting into practice the "right" values; and about making the "right" decisions in everyday life. He said, "I believe that these are the keys to meaningful accomplishments, real happiness, and true success in life," and then emphasized the importance of self-discipline by saying, "parents, teachers, mentors, and others can direct, guide, advise, and pray, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands."
Using colorful analogies about people faced with moral dilemmas, Mr. Patterson spoke about the personal challenge of doing the right thing. "Being a right person is about the choices you make and the values you cling to," he said, "Values are like muscles. You have to exercise them. You must employ them everyday."
Mr. Patterson concluded his speech by using the story of his challenging rise from a young entrepreneur to the Chairman of OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation to illustrate that even with a great vision and plan; he could not have achieved the success he has achieved today without the friends and business partners who provided support and encouragement, and believed in him.
"Mr. Patterson touched the heart of every student, parent, faculty member and friend of Chesapeake Academy. His examples of how his personal values provided the foundation for positive life-changing events made a significant impact on the audience," said board of trustees chair Ron Mihills. "It was especially gratifying to listen to Chesapeake Academy students the next morning as they reflected on Mr. Patterson’s message and repeated the importance of establishing right values that they had gleaned from it," he said.
