Julien G. Patterson Speaks at the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities May 8, 2008
On April 29, 2008, Mr. Julien G. Patterson, Founder and Chairman, OMNIPLEX World Services Corporation, spoke at the conference for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities held at Norfolk State University. The conference and workshop events were attended by more than 200 representatives from the HBCU community, and attendees from the federal and private sector. The focus of the conference was to provide attendees with an opportunity to interact with federal agency representatives and to learn about proposal development, grants and contracts, fellowships, internships, and other initiatives. Mr. Patterson was able to assist in tying together the many threads that make up successful business relationships in the federal arena.
Mr. Patterson spoke to an audience of 125 and discussed the Power of Three – Developing and Enhancing Partnerships. He presented the definition of success as "a formula that you put into practice every day," stating that success is built upon having a vision, a plan, and relationships. In addition, Mr. Patterson offered the group the observation that "the winning formula is having a clear vision about what you want to accomplish, having a real plan as to how to achieve it, and building valuable relationships with people who believe in you and in what you are trying to do."
In his remarks to the group, he provided his perspective on successful partnerships, "The men and women in the most successful partnerships are the agitators, pioneers, and game-changers who work hard to anticipate and head off potential challenges, issues, and problems. The backbone of what they do is to never take their success for granted."
Mr. Patterson also said that he cautions businesses to be focused on improving strategic position in the marketplace and secondly, to become preoccupied with constantly trying to create and develop financial, human, and social capital. He went on to discuss the challenges of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in consistently attracting and retaining promising students and professors and his appreciation for the funding issues that these institutions frequently have to recognize and address. He also cautioned the audience that partnerships can fail because the basics of communication, commitment, and collaboration get lost.
Mr. Patterson encouraged the audience with his closing statement, "Partnerships provide a marvelous opportunity to give others a push, help them grow, provide encouragement, and enhance the quality of their lives. And in return, we experience the same."
